Three things quietly dragging your Airbnb rating

Most rating problems are not a hospitality failure. They are two or three small things repeating across months of stays, and they are genuinely hard to see from the inside.

If your Airbnb rating is slipping, the cause is usually one of three things: an accuracy gap between what the listing promises and what the guest finds, friction at check-in, or the distance between a cleaned home and a guest-ready one. All three show up in your category ratings before they show up in your overall score.

Why you cannot see it from the inside

Two things make this hard.

First, your overall rating is not an average of the six categories. Airbnb states plainly that overall is its own category. So a listing can hold a decent overall score while one category quietly runs low, and nothing about the headline number tells you which.

Second, you read reviews one at a time, months apart. The pattern only appears when you look at the whole history at once, which is exactly what nobody does with their own listing.

To see the categories: go to Today, then Menu, then Insights, then Reviews. With professional hosting tools, go to Performance and then Quality. Category averages also sit alongside your reviews on the listing page.

1. The accuracy gap

Airbnb defines accuracy as whether the home was represented with up to date photos and information, and whether everything was in good working condition.

That second half surprises hosts. A broken appliance is not filed as a maintenance issue. It lands as an accuracy problem, because the listing promised something the stay did not deliver.

What to change: walk your listing as a stranger would read it. Every amenity listed, every claim in the description, every photo taken before the last renovation. If it is listed, it works and it exists, or it comes off the listing.

2. Friction at check-in

Check-in is its own category, and Airbnb asks guests one question about it: was it easy?

When a guest rates it poorly, they pick from set options, including “Hard to locate” and “Unclear instructions”. That is unusually helpful, because the guest has effectively named the cause for you.

What to change: the instructions are the product here, not the lock. Test them from the guest’s position, at night, on a phone, without local knowledge. Update them the same day anything changes, a code, a lockbox, a gate, a building door.

3. Cleaned is not guest-ready

Airbnb’s cleanliness standard is specific. The home should be free of health hazards like mould and pests, and free of extensive dust, pet dander and dirty dishes.

Most rating damage here is not a dirty home. It is the small miss that survives a proper clean: the smell that only appears once windows are shut, a stain on a linen, dust on a surface nobody wiped.

What to change: separate cleaning from checking. Someone walks the space after the clean, in the same order every time, looking with a guest’s eyes rather than a cleaner’s.

How to improve your Airbnb rating once you find it

Be honest about which problem you have. A category that has been low for a year needs a different response from one that dipped last month. If your reviews are dragging and you cannot see the pattern, that is what Rating Rescue is for. We read the full history at once, name the recurring cause, tell you straight whether any review actually qualifies for removal, and hand you the fixes in order.

It also covers the harder case. If your listing has been flagged for quality issues, or has already been taken down, we work through the appeal with you: what Airbnb weighs when it reviews one, what evidence to attach, and how the timings work, so what you file is the strongest version of your case.

Frequently asked questions

Is my overall rating an average of the six categories?

No. Airbnb states overall rating is its own category, not an average of the others.

Where do I see my category ratings?

Today, then Menu, then Insights, then Reviews. With professional hosting tools, Performance then Quality.

When does my rating first appear?

Once at least three guests have rated your home, the average appears near your title in search and on the listing.

How fast can a rating recover?

It moves at the speed future guests review you. There is no way to shortcut an average, which is why fixing the cause matters more than chasing the number.
