Airbnb's direct booking links: a lower fee when you bring the guest

There is nothing to activate, and nothing to request. But there is something to build. This test rewards hosts who bring their own guests. The hosts who benefit are the ones with an audience: a guest email list, active social profiles, photos that make people click. Start building that now and you are ready, whether this test reaches you or not.

The interesting part is not the discount. It is the signal. Airbnb is moving all hosts to one 15.5% service fee this year, and at the same time it is testing a lower fee for bookings the host brings. In simple terms: demand Airbnb finds for you costs 15.5%. Demand you find yourself may cost less.

The two rates tell us something too. Some hosts got 6%, others 10%. When a company tries two prices at once, it is usually measuring how big the reduction needs to be to change behaviour. That reads like a company deciding what host-originated demand is worth to it, not running a one-off promotion.

One example. On a $1,000 booking, the standard fee is $155. Through a direct booking link it would be $60 at the 6% rate, or $100 at the 10% rate.

Be careful with the name. This is not true direct booking. The guest still books and pays on Airbnb, and the guest relationship stays on the platform. But it changes the math for every host who does their own marketing, and it points at the skill that will matter most next: generating your own demand.
